Professional removal of tooth calculus and sandblasting
Professional removal of tooth calculus is extremely important because only with proper oral hygiene we can preserve the health of our teeth. Calculus causes many different problems such as gingivitis, periodontal disease, wobbling teeth and tooth decay (caries). Bacteria that are found in calculus can increase the risk of bad breath, gum disease and discolouring of the teeth.
WHY DOES CALCULUS APPEAR?
The first step in formation of calculus is plaque. Plaque is a colourless layer of bacteria sedimented on the surface of the tooth. It retains impurities on teeth and can cause bad breath, gum disease etc. Plaque can be removed with regular teeth brushing (at least 2 times a day) and by flossing.
Calculus appears due to sedimentation of hard plaque, and cannot be removed easily only by teeth brushing. The only way for removal of the calculus is visiting your dentist. Because of its irregular and rough surface, it retains bacteria and acids that deteriorate the tooth enamel and can cause caries, periodontal disease as well as gingivitis and bad breath.
Once calculus has appeared, it cannot be removed by regular teeth brushing. That is why regular dental cleanings by your dentist are reccomended.
PROFESSIONAL REMOVAL OF CALCULUS
With professional removal of calculus, it is also possible to remove the remains of plaque, as well as pigmentation as a result of continuous smoking and consumption of coloured food and beverages. Professional removal of calculus is done at the dental office with special innstruments for softening and removal of calculus and is completely painless.
After the removal of calculus it is neccessary to do the sandblasting and polishing of teeth to obtain the surface of the teeth as smooth as possible in order to avoid the apperance of calculus. It is important to emphasize that professional removal of calculus is considered painless, but during the very process, a mild sensitivity on the cervical part of the teeth is possible.
Calculus appears mostly because of inadequate oral hygiene, that is due to hardening of tooth plaque. The appearance of calculus can be slowed down only with adequate oral hygiene that includes teeth brushing and flossing at least two times a day.
SANDBLASTING AND POLISHING
After the professional removal of calculus, the sandblasting and polishing are done. Sandblasting is done by using small, microabrasive particles of sand mixed with water.
This method is completely painless. Sandblasting successfully removes the stains caused by smoking, consumption of coloured food and beverages which leave pigmentation on teeth that are hard to remove only by brushing.
Once your dentist has finished the sandblasting treatment, polishing is needed. It is done with special paste and brushes which leave your teeth smooth and white.
